And the six that followed certainly were. Henry took his bride-to-be out every day, showing her all the wonders of the surrounding countryside. Beth took everything in with wide-eyed excitement. Any last fears she might have had about the Fourth Earl of Berwick were extinguished during those happy days, and she became blissfully content, looking forward to the upcoming wedding with all her heart.

Unfortunately, Henry could not be with her all the time, and during the hours she had alone, she explored by herself. Only one thing disturbed her, and that was Janey Evans. Several times now Beth had noticed the tall, gangling woman watching her intently through her icy blue eyes. It was almost as though she was following her - keeping a close eye on her movements around the castle. Beth shivered, but again told herself that she was being silly. The woman is probably making sure I don't get into trouble! She can’t possibly be as mean as her brother otherwise Henry would have gotten rid of her.

Neither did Beth forget about the old woman in the tower. Her first visit to Maire had moved her considerably, and she made sure she visited her future mother-in-law as often as she could. She told Maire about her life, what had happened to her, and how she had been forced to desert her family. Maire listened patiently, occasionally nodding sagely. Beth could tell she was glad of the company.

"My wedding is tomorrow," she told the old woman the night before the big event. "Could you come? It would make me very happy."

Maire met Beth's eyes, and her own black ones were sad. She pulled a sheet of paper towards her and scrawled a message.
